"B'Elanna, I didn't expect you," said Janeway, staring up at her Chief Engineer from her desk in the Ready Room.

"Aren't they always the best kind of surprises? The ones you don't expect?"

"Yes, I suppose they are." Janeway's lip curled into a lop-sided grin, "Well, Lieutenant, what brings you?" There was something about B'Elanna's face that had Janeway mesmerised; she would have sworn the hybrid's dark eyes were shining more than they usually did and her cheeks were slightly flushed. It excited the Captain greatly but she tried hard not to show it.

"There's something I need to do, Kathryn, something I've been putting off for a long, long time. I've dreamed about it often enough, it's time to make it a reality now." The hybrid moved close to Janeway's desk and paused in front of it, stretching out her hand to the woman she smiled down upon.

Janeway frowned back, with a slight smile in amongst the confusion, as she took the hand offered to her and allowed the Engineer to lead her slowly around the desk. "B'Elanna...?"

"Don't, Kathryn. If you're going to say anything, please just confine it to yelling at me afterwards." B'Elanna's eyes became very serious as she slid her left arm around the Captain's trim waist and pulled the woman towards her, awaiting a protest that seemed slow in materialising as she looked from one blue/grey eye to the other and down to the mouth, slightly open in surprise.

Slowly, so slowly, the hybrid's lips found those of her Superior Officer and moved against them tentatively, trying to gauge the reaction and modify her next move accordingly. At first the woman in her arms did not respond, seemingly overcome by the sudden event, and then she seemed to come to a decision and, responding to the kiss, she left the Engineer in no doubt that this had been a good idea.

"You may have noticed," breathed Kathryn, breaking away slightly, "that I'm not calling for help."

"Yeah, I had noticed that."

"God, B'Elanna" growled Kathryn, taking hold of B'Elanna's fine head between her hands and angling her head slightly, "What the hell took you so long?"

B'Elanna looked in warm amazement at the sleeping tiger she'd awoken, and said quietly, before enjoying the moment, "Maybe it's me who should call for help!"

"Maybe it is."
